I have always imagined Irene not having a very stable family (or maybe didn't even have one) for whatever reasons and leaving it when she was very young and making her way in life since then. And unlike Sherlock who locked himself up to everyone and was alone, Irene locked herself up and went right into the arena to be the center of attention.

I tend to fall more on the “not very stable family” end of it, so cool that someone else thinks that too. 

YES. I tend to think her choice of profession was a sort of- turning my past weaknesses on their head and making them my strengths- sort of deal. That would probably make more sense if I explained it more but I’ll end up rambling on for paragraphs.
