OH MY GOD LET ME EXPLAIN.
OK.
So art therapy hinders around the idea, or philosophy if you will, that healing can be promoted through artistic expression. Basically this means that through engaging in some sort of artistic activity (sketching, painting, ext.), that has some sort of guided purpose, catharsis can be gained, or a greater understanding of one’s self. It can be a form of release for the patient as well as an outlet for emotion/turmoil. What an art therapist does is guide this process, essentially. So you have to have formal knowledge and credentials in both art and in clinical psychology.
(in case you’re interested, there’s also music therapists. and some more on art therapy because I could seriously go on and on.)
Side note I love being sent psych questions so let me just hug you for this.
